The land is supposedly haunted by Don Antonio Feliz, Dona Petronilla, Griffith J. Griffith, a young girl, and several others, as well as some kind of humanoid beast. In 2007, the film was followed up with a direct-to-DVD sequel, Return to House on Haunted Hill, with Jeffrey Combs reprising his role as Vannacut and was released in both rated and unrated editions. The late 1970s through the early 90s was a golden age of the horror/slasher flick, and nowhere was filming of the genre more prevalent than in the City of Angels and its environs. Many horror locales from that time period remain unchanged today, still possessing the power to give those in the know a good scare. Celebrate the 45th anniversary of Halloween and more with our guide to iconic horror movie locations in Los Angeles. For the campy 1999 remake, the amusement park was largely a model, based on a real park in Orlando, Florida.

The abandoned mansion across the street also boasts a horror film resume – it appeared in The Convent, Twice Dead, Evil Toons and The Immortalizer, just to name a few. Castle eschews standard Gothic, and uses Frank Lloyd Wright’s superb Ennis House, 2607 Glendower Avenue, a Mayan-temple influenced structure built of pre-cast concrete blocks. After the release of the movie, it was nightly besieged by bozos, hurling bottles. Chavez Ravine is haunted by more than just the eerie specter of displaced poor people—it’s also said to have one or two actual ghosts, as well as a spooky mist.

Loren later uses Trent’s skeleton to scare Annabelle into the acid as well. “In just a minute, I’ll show you the only really haunted house in the world,” Watson Pritchard, played by Elisha Cook Jr., says in the movie. “Since it was built a century ago, seven people—including my brother—have been murdered in it.” The film’s plot follows five people who are promised $10,000 each if they can spend the whole night in the eerie property, which is “played” by the Ennis House. “It’s a really modern house, yet it uses ancient forms,” said Michael Wyetzner, architect at Michielli + Wyetzner Architects, in the newest episode of Blueprints, a YouTube series for AD.

The building's security system is mysteriously tripped, locking everyone inside – a stunt which Price blames on Evelyn.

Over time, these two elements became commonplace in horror homes, and, as such, can been seen in many other classic films, such as the house in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice and The Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Every mission in California is said to be haunted, but only one has ghost cats! The lore goes that Father Francisco Uria kept four pet cats whom he loved so much that when he died, the “four cats solemnly marched to the chapel. Leaping to the rope of the chapel bell, they swung it back and forth, tolling out the mournful message that the padre was dead. The grand old department store (now a Southwest Law School building) is supposedly haunted by a little girl who was killed in an elevator shaft.

It’s the art deco frontage of the Griffith Observatory, 2800 East Observatory Road in Griffith Park, Los Angeles (previously a major location for Rebel Without a Cause). Of course, the Ennis House also makes appearances in non-haunted roles—an animated version was even created for an episode of South Park. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation credits the property’s exoticism to its lasting Hollywood appeal. Additionally, its proximity to Tinseltown, the unique ability to look both ancient and modern, and its grand scale make it a special piece of LA real estate. If you’ve ever seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Day of the Locust, or Blade Runner, then you’ve also seen the Ennis House. In the films, the property is used to depict a vampire mansion, a private residence, and an apartment building respectively. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1923 and constructed in 1924, the home has made more than 80 onscreen appearances throughout its near century-long existence, according to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. However, it was the home’s feature in House on Haunted Hill in 1959 that brought it into ghoulish acclaim.
Price opens a window in the attic, then sacrifices himself to give the others time to escape. The infamous prom scene from the 1976 Brian De Palma film, Carrie took place at the gym of the former Pier Avenue Junior High School in Hermosa Beach. While the school’s gym interior was used for some filming, a replica of it was created on a soundstage at Culver Studios for the massacre scene. Pier Avenue Junior High shut its doors in 1975 and was subsequently converted into the Hermosa Beach Community Center, which still looks largely the same as it did in "Carrie." The Stimson House is located a five-minute walk from the LATTC/Ortho Institute Station of the Metro E Line (Expo).

They have faked Evelyn's death, plotting to frame Price for the murders, hoping one of the guests will kill him in self-defense. Evelyn heartlessly kills Blackburn, adding another victim, then releases a delirious Price from the chamber. Sara finds Price, covered in blood and with Blackburn's severed head nearby, and shoots him. Eddie and Pritchett arrive and bring Sara upstairs, after which Evelyn approaches Price to gloat. Price, protected by a bulletproof vest and posing as dead, attacks Evelyn. As they scuffle, Evelyn is thrown through a decaying door, revealing the evil entity of the house – The Darkness.
Secretly lovers, the two of them have orchestrated the various mishaps to manipulate Nora into killing Frederick. Nora, seeing Frederick enter the basement with a gun in his hand, does indeed shoot him. After she flees, David slips in to dispose of Frederick's body in the vat of acid, and the lights go out. In 2007, the film was followed by a direct-to-DVD sequel, Return to House on Haunted Hill, which was released in both rated and unrated editions. In addition to House II, the mansion has appeared in After Midnight (1989) and The Manor (2021).
Frederick Loren, an eccentric millionaire, invites five people to a party he is throwing for his fourth wife, Annabelle, in an allegedly haunted house he has rented. He promises to give each guest $10,000 with the stipulation that they stay the entire night in the house after the doors are locked at midnight, all the windows are barred, and there are no phones or radios to use. The guests are test pilot Lance Schroeder, newspaper columnist Ruth Bridges, psychiatrist Dr. David Trent, who specializes in hysteria, Nora Manning, who works for one of Loren's companies, and the house's owner, Watson Pritchard. All are strangers to both the Lorens and each other, their only commonality being their lust for money. Hollywood’s historic Wattles Mansion was used as the demon-possessed home where Jonathan Graves lived in the 1985 horror-comedy, Ghoulies. The property, which was built as the winter residence for wealthy Nebraska banker Gurdon Wattles, is currently owned by the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation and its grounds are accessible to the public.
Annabelle privately warns Lance that her husband is scheming something and that she suspects him of murdering his second and third wives after his first wife disappeared. The guests learn the party's rules downstairs, and each is given a Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammer for protection. Having encountered further apparitions, Nora decides against staying the night, but the caretakers lock the doors five minutes early, taking that option out of the guests' hands.
Evelyn seemingly dies in front of the others, strapped to an electroshock therapy table. Eddie knocks him out and they lock Price in the "Saturation Chamber", an archaic zoetrope device that Vannacutt used to treat schizophrenics. When the others leave, he turns the chamber on, leaving Price to be tortured by the moving images and ghostly hallucinations, resulting in a seizure. In Vannacutt's office, Sara and Eddie find a portrait of the hospital's head staff and realize that the party guests are descendants of the five survivors of the 1931 fire. Pritchett deduces that the spirits themselves hacked the guest list on Price's computer.
